Idea 1:
Education is horribly expensive. Why isn't there something out
there that can let us go to school, or earn some type of professional
education for free; why is it that when we go to school, we have to use
their books? I have the Kindle app on my Droid phone that works
perfectly fine for me. So, why is it that I'm forced to use this
proprietary ebook that my college has. Not only that, but I am
automatically billed for it. So in my case, I have to pay for the book
twice, because their ebook reader just doesn't work for me. It's
functionality and easy of use is nothing like the Kindle type of
readers. It would be so much easier if they were to use books that I
could find at the library, or if I wanted I could download them onto my
e-reader of choice.
Seeing how I'm not a scholar that is able to teach the basic
courses like Sociology, Psychology, English, and the rest of them; I
have decided that I would like to try something more along my
expertise. In my spare time (that's a joke if you actually know me), I
am going to try to start some type of free online training for Cisco and
other Information Technology certifications. I'm not quite sure how I'm
going to do it yet; however, I do have a couple of ideas.
My first thought is to offer an actual online visual class. I
would open a WebEx session and send the invite out to as many people as
I know for a set day and time. I would then have the webcam on me; as
well as a part of the screen to show my desktop and my writings / notes
that I am laying down. I would also then be able to flop back and forth
on the screen to different pieces of equipment and live configurations.
This would not only offer the students a chance to learn the technical
configuration stuff that you can get out of the book, but it would also
allow them to see the physical equipment and what it looks like. This
is a huge problem in a lot of the certifications now-a-days. They don't
offer any type of hands on; neither will I technically, however, at
least I would be able to give a visual reference.
My second thought is to take the CBTNuggets approach and offer
online videos. Where I basically do the same thing as above, but
without being live. It would just be a video posted to a website with a
link to the video for download, or live streaming. This would offer
students the opportunity to come back and revisit any lessons that they
have either missed, or didn't thoroughly understand.
Now that I think about it, I have just solved my dilemma; I will do
both. I will offer the online class and record the whole thing so that
students can come back and revisit a subject if they wish too.
I guess now I have to get off of my butt and actually start
producing some of the training material.
IDEA 2:
How many of us have become addicted to Facebook in the last couple
of years? I could name a bunch of people right off the top of my head;
then I could name a couple hundred more as soon as I can grab my phone
and log on.
How many of us would like to be our own boss? Or how many of us
are really good at what we do and would just like to do some small jobs
on the side every now and then? I know I have been wanting to for a
long time; however, between work and a lack of knowledge on how to
properly (and cheaply) market myself, I am kind of stuck.
Why don't we create a Facebook type of site, specifically for
contractors and 1099 workers. You would just create your profile about
what you can offer, select some categories that would apply to your
services, and then enter in your location information. This would allow
local companies to log on and do a quick search for you. Then wish the
proper use of technology, you can be notified via e-mail, txt, or even
an old fashion phone call.
Problem solved. You no longer have to figure out how to make a
website, how to market yourself, or spend valuable time going out and
bothering your local businesses for work. It would theoretically come
right to you.
